How branding works.
Branding is the soul of any PR and brand management.
It works by shaping a customer's psychological approach, overall reputation about a business, their product, or service. It acts as a bridge between the businesses and their customers to build trust and loyalty. This may make their customers instinctively prefer their offers over existing competitors. Before we dive in to discuss what's and whys of branding we need to understand what branding is.
Branding has four primary types -
Product: Focuses on a single aspect (service or product) highlighting its USPs against its competitors.
Corporate: It encompasses the company's core values, aims, future goals, their history and largely on reputation. It presents the whole organisation to its customers.
Service: This type in its totality relies on and specializes in customer perception, overall experience, and its own quality of customer support.
Personal branding: This type helps build public reputation and sharing professional expertise such as an entrepreneur, influencer, or industry expert. It is on an individual basis.
The key components:
Brand Strategy: Defines the mission, values, target audience, and competitive positioning of the service, firm or product, in short strategising.
Brand Identity: It includes all the tangible aspects that people see and hear- color palette, typography, logo, brand voice, and imagery. All these contribute to the image of the brand.
Brand Marketing: Communicating your identity across channels like- social media, advertising, packaging, and customer service. That is, online and offline marketing.
What is it used for?
As the name suggests branding is to give your brand its unique identity, that not only differentiates it from other brands but also makes its own imagery and connection with its consumers. It helps a lot with building trust and loyalty of the customers, and the brand’s future growth and stability.
How is it used?
When a brand, an individual, a product or a service needs to have a distinct identity of its own it needs to focus on how it differentiates from its competitors, how to make customers trust them or the service or product and how to establish connections with the said customers. It has to be consistent and communicative.
Who needs it and why?
Everyone and everything that sells needs branding. From global organizations to solo entrepreneurs branding is indeed a need to match the fast paced growth and competition. In simple terms, just like marketing, branding helps fill the gap between the seller and the buyer. The major difference is the psychological dynamic.
Branding needs to be precise and consistent. As customers are loyal and trusting towards a particular service or product, branding helps to make marketing cheaper to scale and helps retain loyal customers during economic slumps and changes. It turns a business from a commodity into a human entity which coincides with the psychological aspects of the customer.
